Chapter Ten
âTell me about your dream,â said Tara, anxious to hear more. Was it possible Aashi had seen her talking to the boy with hair of fire? It couldnât be. But how had she known otherwise?
âI told you about it already,â said Aashi, shrinking back into her bed.
âNo, you didnât. You told me nothing. I want to know every detail.â Her tone was harsh despite the effort she was putting into sounding calm.
âPlease donât be cross with me, Tara,â she said, seeming to be trying to work out how sheâd managed to upset her sister.
âIâm not cross. I promise. You just surprised me, thatâs all.â She tried to coat her words with enough sugar to make them convincing. If Aashi got scared sheâd tell her nothing and she really needed to hear about the dream. âI think your dream might be important. Would you tell me about it?â
She nodded. âFirst, I saw you running. You looked so beautiful, but you looked sad, too. You scared me. I wanted to help you, but I couldnât. I wasnât there, you see. I was just watching. Then I saw the prince. I saw him see you. You looked at each other and I was screaming out in my dream for him to help you. I was begging him. Then he gave you something. Money, I think. And I was calling out to you to stay with him, but you didnât. You started running again.â
âThen what? What did the boy do?â She was still wondering if heâd chased after her or stood and watched her leave.
âI donât know. I mustâve woken up.â
Tara sat on the edge of the bed and tried to take in what sheâd just been told. Aashi had been there. Sheâd seen her. What did that make her? Some kind of witch? A fortuneteller?
âHave you had dreams like this before?â she asked.
Aashi nodded.
âI need you to listen to me. Itâs very important. Donât tell anyone about these dreams. Only me. Do you understand? I donât want anyone taking you away from me.â
âWhy would they take me away?â The fear in her eyes intensified.
âBecause your kind of dreaming is special dreaming. People wonât understand. Theyâll want to ask you lots of questions if they find out.â She knew she was being paranoid, but there was no way she was going to risk Aashi being taken away from her for one of those medical studies sheâd heard rumors about. This secret of Aashiâs was best kept exactly thatâa secret.
âWhyâs my dreaming special?â
Tara held out her hand and showed Aashi the folded notes. âYou dream was real. You did see me. I was running. The boy did give me money. I donât know how, but you saw it all.â
Aashi smiled. âWeâre rich,â she whispered. âI knew heâd save us.â
âHe hasnât saved us. Heâs helped us, but this money wonât last forever. Itâs enough to feed us for a while, thatâs all.â
Her eyes lit up at the mention of food.
âIâm so sorry, Aashi.â
âWhy?â She reached for Taraâs hand.
